The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is considering putting a
cap of one mobile tower per building across the city. If approved, it
will be a victory for citizens and corporators who are fighting against
mobile tower radiation for years.
The civic body’s move comes after a meeting of the activists and corporators with the development plan department officials on Wednesday. As per the civic body’s existing mobile tower policy, it has a cap of two mobile towers per building.
“The activists and public representatives have demanded a cap of one mobile tower per building. We are considering it but are yet to take final call on it,” said Rajiv Kukunoor, chief engineer of development plan department.
The civic officials said the advisory guidelines issued by the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) does not put any cap of mobile towers per building.
“We submitted the revised mobile tower policy to the municipal commissioner on Wednesday,” said a senior civic official. He added that the revised mobile tower policy also requires the nod of top floor residents along with 70% residents of the buildings to install the mobile towers on the buildings.
BJP corporator Vinod Shelar, who is heading a campaign against illegal mobile towers, said: “The officials have also agreed to publish its list of legal mobile towers on its portal.”
