DIAL M FOR MALADIES

Central Indictment Of Cell Phones Pleases Experts
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Mumbai: Your cell phone could be providing more than just a ticket to easy communication. It could be giving you a mild headache or a persistent buzz in your ears. It has the power to increase your stress hormones and affect your sleep patterns.

As reported by TOI on Thursday, a Central government committee has held that radiation from mobile phones and their towers are a definite health hazard. It also blamed the radiation for the dwindling number of bees, sparrows and insects.

The committee’s verdict is a vindication of many city-based experts who have been relentlessly calling attention to the illeffects of the cell phone.

“For years we have been saying that mobiles have a way of affecting your health. Be it your endocrine system that generates hormones or heart rhythms, mobile radiation have a way of interfering,” says endocrinologist Dr Shashank Joshi.

Joshi says that mobile phones should be treated as an emergency tool that one picks up only when in need. “It is most distressing to see people under 18 hanging on to mobile phones. It affects their system much more than adults.” Joshi had published one of the most comprehensive reviews on mobile phone radiation in JAPI, the peer-reviewed medical journal of the Association of Physicians of India.

Members of the Mobile Tower Grievance Forum, a group of citizens who believe that mobiles cause cancer, are most happy. “The report has said exactly what we have been saying for long. Cell phones and their towers are harmful to health,” said the forum’s Milind Bembalkar.

Abroad, there are radiation values given on every cell phone set. “But in India, we do not follow such practice. Also, the radiation from the towers here is ten times more than what it is in European counties (as compared to 0.001 watt/sq mt there, we have 10 watt/sq mt in India). This is done so that they don’t have to build up more towers. But that invariably happens, as there are so many companies in the market,” Bembalkar added.

The group now wants to meet officials of the Maharashtra government to ensure that the state, like many other Indian states, draws up rules and guidelines.

The cell phone industry has repeatedly said that long-term studies from across the world have not shown any significant link between people’s health and mobile radiation. However, a recent paper by British telecom officials said that precautionary principle is best given the lack of scientific data. So, as Joshi says, “Reduce your talk time. You can either SMS or use your smart phone to send an email. Digital phones emit less radiation than analogue ones.”

WRONG NUMBERS
THE ILL-EFFECTS OF RADIATION FROM MOBILE PHONES AND TOWERS ARE USUALLY CLASSIFIED AS THERMAL AND NON-THERMAL

Thermal Effects

Exposure to very high radio frequency power densities (100 mW/cm2 or more) can heat biological tissue and increase body temperature

General eye irritation and cataracts were reported in workers exposed to high levels of radio frequency and microwave radiation, but there is no evidence in general public

Non-Thermal Effects

Neurological
Predominant one-sided usage, high daily usage and exposure for a large duration of time (usually more than 10 years) have been found in some studies to raise the risk of brain tumours

Psychiatric
Psychiatrists report increasing incidence of ringtone anxiety in which users imagine their phone to be ringing or feel it vibrating

Cardiovascular
Mobiles can cause electromagnetic interference in the working of implanted pacemakers

Endocrine
A French group studied the influence of electromagnetic fields emitted by GSM-900 cellular telephones on steroid and pituitary hormone levels in healthy males and discovered drops

Reproductive
Rats subjected to mobile radiation were found to have damaged DNA and low sperm count

Miscellaneous
A study said that prolonged use of a cell phone leads to inactivity and is associated with an increased risk of obesity

Mobiles pose health risk, says govt panel - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: Radiation from mobile phones and towers poses serious health risks, including loss of memory, lack of concentration, disturbance in the digestive system and sleep disturbances, according to an inter-ministerial committee formed by the ministry of communications and information technology to study the hazards posed by mobile phones.

The committee has also attributed the disappearance of butterflies, bees, insects and sparrows vanishing from big cities to mobile phone-related radiation.

The eight-member committee, which included representatives from the health ministry, department of biotechnology and member secretary, DoT, has recommended that mobile phones not adhering to standard levels of specific absorption rate (SAR) - a measure of the amount of radiofrequency energy absorbed by the body while using a phone -- should be barred.

It has said mobile towers should not be installed near high density residential areas, schools, playgrounds and hospitals. "The localized SAR value as per the Indian guidelines standard is 2 watt per kg, averaged over a six minute period and using a 10 gram average mass. With higher SAR values of mobile handsets the public could potentially receive much higher radiofrequency exposure. We have recommended that SAR levels to be lowered down to 1.6 watt/kg, as prescribed by the Federal Communication Commission of US," said a member.

Dr R S Sharma, ICMR scientist who represented the health ministry on the committee, said the findings are based on case studies presented by different experts. He added that the recommendations would be used to formulate a national policy and guidelines on electromagnetic frequency (EMF) radiation for telecom towers.

"In the case of a person using a cellphone, most of the heating occurs on the surface of the head, causing its temperature to increase by a fraction of a degree. The brain blood flow is capable of disposing this excess by increasing the local blood flow and increasing body temperature," states the report. It says that the non-thermal effects of cellphone use — attributed to the induced electromagnetic effects inside the body's biological cells — are more harmful.

"People who are chronically exposed to low-level wireless antenna emissions and users of mobile handsets have reported feeling several unspecific symptoms during and after its use, ranging from burning and tingling sensation in the skin of the head, fatigue, sleep disturbances, dizziness, lack of concentration, ringing in the ears, reaction time, loss of memory, headache, disturbance in digestive system and heart palpitation," the report says.

The committee was chaired by Ram Kumar, advisor (technology), department of telecommunications, and had Arvind Duggal from the department of biotechnology and R N Jindal from the environment ministry among its other members.

Member scientist, ICMR R S Sharma said that compared to Europeans, Indian cellphone users are more at risk for adverse affect of radiation due the country's hot tropical climate, low body mass index, and low fat content. "We have recommended amendment in the Indian Telegraph Act 1885 and rules so that only mobile handsets satisfying radiation standards should be permitted in the country," he said.

The report suggests that children, adolescents and pregnant women should avoid excessive use of cellphones. People in general should use hands-free technologies to minimize the contact of the head with cell phone. "People having active medical implants should keep their cellphone at least 30 cm away from the implant," it adds.

Said Girish Kumar, professor in the department of electrical engineering at IIT Bombay, whose research on hazards of cellphone use was taken as a reference for the committee decision, "There is a 400% increase in the risk of brain cancer among teenagers using cell phones for long periods. The younger the child, the deeper is the penetration of electromagnetic radiation as children`s skulls are thinner.

Another government-funded study on radiation from mobile phones and towers at the Jawaharlal Nehru University ( JNU) found that the exposure to radiation from mobile towers and mobile phones could have an adverse impact on male fertility and pose health hazards by depleting the defence mechanism of cells.

Dear All,

An Inter-ministerial committee was constituted to examine the effect of EMF radiation on human health. A soft copy of the report (Inter Ministerial Committee Report on EMF Radiation) is placed on the DOT website. They have asked for feedback by 25.02.2011. The above can be seen at: http://www.dot.gov.in/miscellaneous/imc.htm

You can see the full report at

http://www.dot.gov.in/miscellaneous/IMC%20Report/IMC%20Report.pdf

They have mentioned several health hazards due to radiation and have recommended to use 1/10th of the existing radiation norms, pl see Section 5.7, page 33, which will be 0.92W/m^2 for GSM1800. However, Bio-initiative report has recommended 1000 microwatt/m^2=0.001W/m^2,

pl see Section 5.4, page 32.

I have written several reports and given presentations, these can be found by using Google search words as "Girish Kumar Cell tower Radiation". Based on our study, they should adopt 0.1 W/sq.meter immediately and which should be reduced further to 0.01 W/sq.meter in 1 to 2 years to give sufficient time for operators for smooth network operations.

Please spare time to go through it and educate people and write to the above concerned people at DOT to adopt safer radiation norms.

With regards.

Cell towers likely sources of radiation, disease: Report

Study For DoT Says India Should Tighten Norms

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Mumbai: Cellphone operators have long denied their transmitting towers atop buildings or on highways have any adverse bearing on the health of humans or animals, despite several studies across the world concluding the contrary. Now a report for the Department of Telecommunication by a faculty of the Indian Institute of Technology, Powai, reinforces what scientists have long held—that areas around cellphone towers are highradiation and consequently highrisk zones. Moreover, it recommends that ndia, which has very “relaxed radiation norms’’, must raise the safety bar.

Girish Kumar, professor, electrical engineering department of the Powai institute, who visited rooftops of several buildings and measured radiation on places with cell towers mounted, said: “These towers transmit radiation 24x7, so people living nearby will receive 10,000 to 10,000,000 times stronger signal than required for mobile communication. In India, crores of people reside in these hig radiation zones.’’

Kumar noted the cell phone industry was becoming “another cigarette industry, which for long kept claiming smoking is not harmful. In fact, cellphone/tower radiation is worse than smoking as one cannot see it or smell it, and its effect on health is noted after a long period of exposure.

Unfortunately, all of us are absorbing this slow poison unknowingly.” For instance, Kumar visited the apartment of a lady detected with cancer a year after a cellphone tower was installed in the vicinity. A hand-held broadband radiation monitoring device, taken near the windows, detected radiation levels were around 0.007069 W/m2. India has adopted a radiation norm of 4.7 W/m2, but the study noted serious health effects at as low a level of 0.0001 W/m2. Though India adheres to the radiation density limit set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), Kumar observed Indians faced an added threat: radiation from multiple towers. “One should know the actual radiation pattern (unfortunately not made public) to calculate exact radiation density at a point,’’ he noted. One of the first steps he recommended was tightening radiation norms and reducing number of towers. Many countries in the world have adopted much stricter maximum radiation density values of 0.001 to 0.24 W/m2.

CELL SHOCKING

Cancer Risk

Use of mobile phones for more than years poses a risk of brain cancer. Children and teenagers are five times more susceptible as their brain is not fully developed and radiation penetration is much deeper Infertility Studies confirm cell phone radiation can
drastically affect male fertility. Studies have found 30% sperm decrease in intensive mobile phone users, in addition to damage of sperms Neurodegenerative Diseases

People living near mobile phone base stations are also at risk of developing neuropsychiatric problems as headache, memory loss, nausea, dizziness, tremors, muscle spasms, numbness, tingling, altered reflexes, muscle and joint paint, leg/foot pain, depression, and sleep disturbance. More severe reactions include seizures, paralysis, psychosis and stroke

Skin Damage

Radiation from cell towers and mobile phones affects human skin. It can result in an increase in mast cells, leading to the clinical symptoms of itch, pain, edema and erythema. It also may be instrumental in higher concentration of the transtyretin protein, which has an important role in causing nervous diseases like Alzheimers

Interference With Other Gadgets

Radio frequency exposure from cellular phone base antennas and mobiles can affect patients with pacemakers, implantable cardiovascular defibrillators and impulse generators Melatonin Reduction

Melatonin, a vital neurohormone, regulates our circadian rhythm. Studies with animals show a reduction in melatonin levels following radio frequency radiation exposure from cell phones and cell towers. Turning off transmitters resulted in a significant increased
melatonin levels within few days

Ear & Eye Damage

Radiation emitted by mobiles may damage the delicate workings of the inner ear, and longterm and intensive use for more than four years and for longer than 30 minutes a day creates high risk of irreversible hearing loss. Frequent use of mobiles can also damage the visual system

Sleep Disorders

Use of handsets before going to bed delays and reduces sleep, and causes headaches, confusion and depression. The findings are especially alarming for children and teenagers as they use cell phones at night and keep the phone next to their head, it may lead to mood and personality changes, depression, lack of concentration and poor
academic performance

ON THE SPOT

At a farmhouse near Delhi-Gurgaon toll naka, with 4 cell towers, the owner said output of most fruit trees drastically reduced in two years Residents of Usha Kiran, Carmichael Rd, alleged 3 cell towers on neighbouring Vijay Apts, subject them to maximum radiation

At Khar bridge, power density and radiation was way above the permissible limits.

Government to frame rules for mobile towers

Publication: The Times Of India Mumbai; Date:2010 Dec 08; Section:Times City; Page Number 13

Government to frame rules for mobile towers

The government is collecting feedback from concerned departments for framing comprehensive rules and regulations for installation of mobile
towers by cellphone service providers in the state, CM Prithviraj Chavan
stated in a written reply to the state assembly on Tuesday.

‘‘The rules will be finalized soon,’’ Chavan stated in response to the query
raised several members in the House.

A multi-member committee, set up on March 20 this year, under the
additional secretary (health) to study the effects of the electromagnetic rays
emanating from cellphone towers, had recommended various measures
including framing of rules and regulation for mobile towers. The committee
furnished its report to the government on August 6.
